Spitbank Fort was designed to defend the anchorage and the inner approaches to Portsmouth harbour from French invaders and to act as a second line of defence against light draft vessels that had managed to pass the heavier fortified outer defensive forts.

Now reopening as an exclusive retreat suitable for function hire in mid-2012.

One of the most prominent buildings on the harbour now hosts wedding ceremonies
